The Sacred Tusker of Sri Dalada Maligawa

The Sacred Tusker holds a place of great honor and reverence in Sri Lanka’s cultural and religious heritage. At the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, the tusker plays a central role in carrying the Sacred Tooth Relic casket during the grand Esala Perahera — one of the most magnificent Buddhist processions in the world. These majestic elephants, known for their calm and dignified behavior, are carefully chosen and trained for many years to take part in this sacred duty. Adorned with beautifully crafted garments, jeweled ornaments, and shimmering lights, the tusker becomes a living symbol of devotion, purity, and strength. Among the most legendary was Raja, the famous Maligawa Tusker who faithfully carried the Relic for over 30 years. His discipline, gentle nature, and service earned him national recognition — and today, his preserved remains are displayed at the Kandy National Museum as a tribute to his noble service. The Sacred Tusker continues to represent not only the spiritual connection between humans and animals but also the deep respect Sri Lankans hold for tradition, religion, and nature.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Located in the heart of Kandy, Sri Lanka’s last royal capital, the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) is one of the most revered Buddhist temples in the world. It houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, making it a symbol of both spiritual devotion and national pride. Built within the royal palace complex of the ancient Kingdom of Kandy, the temple’s magnificent architecture showcases the rich artistry of the Kandyan era. Its golden-roofed sanctum, intricate wood carvings, and beautiful paintings reflect centuries of cultural heritage and religious significance. Every day, thousands of devotees and visitors from around the world gather to offer prayers and witness the traditional “Thevava” (daily rituals) performed to honor the Relic. The temple also takes center stage during the Esala Perahera, a grand annual pageant featuring traditional dancers, drummers, and beautifully adorned elephants. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sri Dalada Maligawa stands as a timeless reminder of Sri Lanka’s deep Buddhist traditions and its enduring reverence for peace and faith.
